Troubleshooting
The messages Ataytis BOM shows on the report, what causes each, and fixes for the problems a bill of materials table most often runs into.
Messages on the report
| Message | Cause | Fix |
|---|---|---|
| Add Parent and Child to draw the BOM. | One or both required wells are empty. The message names the missing ones. | Drag the parent column to Parent and the child column to Child. |
| Loading the bill of materials. | Power BI is still sending rows. The visual waits for every row, because a BOM is only right when it is whole. | Wait. The message counts the rows received so far. |
| No rows to show. | Filters or slicers leave no rows, or the table is empty. | Review the report filters, or add rows to the bound table. |
| No children were found. | Every row has a blank Child. | Check that the part number column is in Child. |
| Checking the Power BI licence entitlement. | The Power BI Service is confirming the viewer's licence. | Wait for the check to finish. If the visual is then blocked, the viewer has no licence. |
| Ataytis BOM could not draw this view. | An unexpected error. | Refresh the report, or review the fields bound to the visual. |
Messages above the BOM
| Message | Fix |
|---|---|
| Power BI sent only the first 30,000 rows, so this BOM may be incomplete. Filter the report to fewer products. | Filter the report, or the page, to the products being studied. |
| Showing the first 200,000 rows. Collapse branches or choose a product to see the rest. | Collapse branches, choose a product, or raise General → Opening → Row limit. |
| Report filtering is turned off for this visual. | Turn on General → Interactions → Filter the report on click. |
| EB-100 has nothing beneath it to filter by. | Nothing to fix. The position has no row of its own and no components, such as a top-level product with nothing under it. |
Numbers and part numbers in these messages come from your data.
Common problems
| Symptom | Cause and fix |
|---|---|
| Quantities are too large | Power BI is summing repeated rows before the visual sees them. Choose Don't summarize on Quantity in the well. |
| One part appears as two | The part numbers differ by case or spacing, and there is a data note saying so. Make them identical in Power Query. |
| A product I did not expect is top-level | No row lists it as a child, or a row with a blank Parent declares it. Check the rows for that part number. |
| No description beside the part numbers | The description column's name is not recognised, or it is not in Details. Choose it under Data → From Details → Description. |
| Components are in the wrong order | Add a position or find number column to Details, or set Data → Rows → Child order. |
| Extended quantities are blank | A quantity on the path is missing or could not be read. The data notes list the relationships concerned. |
| A branch is marked as a loop | A component eventually contains its own parent. Correct the relationship in the source data. |
| The table shows only some columns | Hidden columns are switched off on the Table tab. Occurrences, Components and Parents are off by default. |
| A column is missing from the tooltip | Tooltips list at most 24 lines. Put the column in Tooltips or Details, and fewer ahead of it. |
| The format pane has no settings | The settings are in the editor: select the visual, open More options (…) and choose Edit. |
| Readers in the Power BI Service see no BOM | They have no licence for the visual. Power BI shows its licence notification in place of it. |
| Power BI shows an unsupported environment message instead of the BOM | The report is somewhere Microsoft does not support licence checks, such as Publish to web or Power BI Report Server. See Where licences cannot be checked. |
| Every quantity is doubled, or tripled | The table holds the BOM of more than one plant, version or alternative, and the copies are added together. Add a single-select slicer on that column. See Plants, versions and alternatives. |
| Two lines of the same part became one | The rows are identical in every column the visual has, so Power BI sends them once. Add the position or line number column to Details. See Field wells and summarising. |
| A slicer leaves only one level | The slicer is on Parent or Child, which keeps only the matching rows. Use the product picker, or slice on a Product or Model column every row carries. |
| Parts appear as extra top-level products after filtering | A filter removed the rows joining them to their parents. Filter on columns every row of a product shares, or set Edit interactions to None from the visual doing the filtering. See Using it in a report. |
| A value has too many decimals, such as $8.199999999999 | Set the decimal places of the column on the Column tools ribbon. For quantities, set Appearance → Numbers → Quantity decimals. |
| An indented BOM draws as one level | The Level column has not been turned into a Parent column. See From an indented BOM. |
Reporting a problem
Include what you expected and what you saw, the data notes from the editor's Data tab, and a few rows of the table with its column names.
