SunburstZoomable Radial Hierarchy for Power BI

You get access to copy the Vega JSON specification directly from this page. Type your column names, choose the colours and labels, then paste the specification into Ataytis Vega Studio inside Power BI Desktop and add the same columns to the visual’s Values field well.

You tell it. Type your column names on this page, exactly as Power BI displays them, and they are written into the specification for you; in Power BI you add those same columns to the visual’s Values field well, exactly as you would for any other visual. Nothing is uploaded here and no JSON needs editing — the specification names your columns, it never contains your figures. If a column is renamed later, the names sit in a few clearly marked places at the very top of the specification rather than scattered through it.

They chart the same shape of data and answer different questions. A sunburst makes proportion easy to compare, because a slice’s sweep is its exact share of the ring inside it and slices at the same level sit side by side. Circle packing makes structure easy to see, because each group physically contains its children. Choose a sunburst when the question is how a total divides; choose Circle Pack when the question is what belongs to what.

The number of rings on show is a setting, and it opens on two. Two rings are thick enough to carry their labels; four are thin enough that most names have to be dropped. The levels below are reached by clicking inwards, which stretches a slice to fill the circle and redraws the rings inside it. Raise the setting if you would rather see the whole hierarchy at once. Whatever you choose, the rings resize to fill the circle at every depth rather than leaving an empty band around themselves.

Because the name would not have fitted. A label set along a ring is bounded by the ring’s thickness and by the slice’s sweep, and a name clipped to a few letters costs a reader as much as no label while taking the room of a real one — so it is shown whole or not at all. The full name, the figure and the path are always in the tooltip. Fewer rings, a smaller label size or a larger visual will all bring more of them back.

No. Report hierarchies are rarely tidy: one branch runs to the fourth level, its neighbour stops at the second, and some rows have a blank in the middle. Each row is read for how deep it actually goes, so a branch that stops early is drawn as a slice that stops early rather than as a ring of blanks, and its figure still counts towards every level above it. A blank never becomes a slice of its own. The one row that is dropped is a row with nothing in the first level, because it belongs to no branch at all.

The rings will not draw, because there is nothing to group or size by. Check the name against the Data table in the Studio, including capitals, spaces and punctuation — Power BI display names are matched exactly.

Ataytis Vega Studio receives up to 10,000 rows, but readability runs out long before that. Every distinct combination of your levels becomes a slice, and a few hundred slices is a texture rather than a chart. Aggregate to the level you actually want to show, and use the outer rings for the detail worth clicking into.
