Ataytis BOM
Multi-level bill of materials (BOM) in Power BI
A bill of materials is a hierarchy, and a flat table hides it. Ataytis BOM draws the whole structure from the Parent–Child rows already in your data, whether they come from an ERP, a PLM system, a database or a spreadsheet, as a tree, an indented table or both, and shows every place a part is used. No level columns, recursive Power Query or DAX PATH to maintain.
30-day free trial. Licensed and billed through Microsoft Marketplace.
Parent and Child in, a multi-level BOM out
No flattening first. Drop in one row per parent and child, as your ERP, PLM system or spreadsheet already has them, and the visual works out every level itself, however deep the structure goes. No fixed level columns, self-joins, recursive Power Query or DAX PATH hierarchy to build and maintain. A part used in three assemblies is one part used three times, not three unrelated rows.
Tree, table, or both
Show a hierarchy tree, an indented table, or both in one visual and let readers switch between them. The two views share open branches, selection and highlighting, so switching never loses your place.
Every place a part is used
Highlight every occurrence of a part and step through them one by one, with the branches holding each one opened on the way. Only these branches hides everything that does not lead to the part.
Where used, from any part
Turn the BOM upside down from any part to see every assembly and top-level product that uses it, and how many each one needs.
Quantities down every path
Map a Quantity and each position shows how many one parent needs and how many the top-level product needs along that path. Where used multiplies the same way upward.
Colour by what matters
Conditional formatting by condition, by value or as a colour scale, on the card or row background, an accent bar, the text or a status dot. Built-in fields such as Is an assembly, Level, Is shared by 2+ parents and Is a circular reference need no data preparation, and an optional legend explains the colours.
Click a part for its details
Selecting a part cross-filters the report and opens a details panel with its position, how often it is used, its parents and components, and every detail column you added. The path bar shows the route from the top-level product, each step clickable.
Large structures stay usable
Search by part number, description or any detail column, focus on one assembly, pick a product from the product picker, and expand to the level you need. The visual loads every row before building, because a BOM is only right when it is whole.
Sample report
Three bills of materials, one visual
Three report pages, an electric bicycle, a solar and battery storage system and an espresso machine, each built from Parent–Child rows. Search for a part, open where used, switch between the tree and the table, and click a card for its details.
Why it is different
Built to sit in a real report
Not a widget bolted onto the page — a visual that reads your data, follows your styling, and answers to your filters.
Build in Desktop with no licence
Power BI Desktop runs the full visual with no licence, no watermark and no sign-up, so a BOM can be built and reviewed on your own data before anyone pays. A licence is needed once the report is published to the Service for others to open.
No level columns to build
One row per parent and child is enough. The visual works out the levels itself, however deep the structure goes, so there are no level columns, self-joins or recursive Power Query to maintain.
One part, however many places
A part used in several assemblies is one item. Shared parts carry a badge with the number of places they are used, in the tree and the table alike, and the table can show it as a column.
A table that behaves like one
Choose, order, rename and size the columns, add data bars, band the rows, keep the hierarchy column frozen while scrolling across, and sort components by any column.
A tree you can style
Card styles, colour by level, detail fields on the cards, square, rounded or curved connectors, and a minimap for wide structures.
Filter the report to a branch
Everything beneath a position filters the rest of the report in one click, and the path bar shows the route from the top-level product to where you are.
Data notes, not silent errors
Circular references, repeated lines and quantities that cannot be read are each explained, rather than quietly dropped or guessed at.
Works like a Power BI visual
Cross-filtering, tooltips, the context menu, keyboard navigation and high contrast mode all behave as Power BI expects.
Certified and self-contained
Microsoft-certified, with no outbound network requests of any kind. Report data is read and drawn inside Power BI, the configuration is saved in the report, and the visual can be used in tenants restricted to certified visuals.
The full technical detail lives in the documentation.
Getting started
From install to published report
Install once, then it is there every time you build a report.
Install from Marketplace
In Power BI Desktop, open Get more visuals, search for Ataytis BOM, and add it. The visual is saved in the report, so nobody who opens it has to install anything.
Add Parent and Child
One row per parent and child, as your ERP exports them. Add Quantity for extended quantities, and anything else about a part, such as description, supplier or cost, to Details.
Choose a view
Select the visual and choose Edit. Pick a hierarchy tree, a table, or both, then style it with a live preview of your own data.
Licence it to publish
Power BI Desktop runs the full visual with no licence and no watermark. A licence is needed once the report goes to the Power BI Service for other people to open. Thirty days free, billed by Microsoft.
Pricing
Priced per user, with volume discounts
A licence is per user. Everyone who opens a published report containing Ataytis BOM in the Power BI Service needs one; Power BI Desktop needs none. The first month is free on every plan.
