Using it in a report
Putting Ataytis BOM to work beside other visuals: slicers that keep products whole, cross-filtering, report page tooltips, drillthrough, bookmarks and large models.
Slicers that keep the structure whole
Every slicer and filter changes the rows the visual receives, and the BOM is rebuilt from them. Slice on something every row of a structure shares, and the structure stays whole:
| Slice on | Result |
|---|---|
| Plant, version, alternative or revision | One copy of the BOM at a time, with the right quantities. Use single select. |
| A Product or Model column on every row | The whole structure of the chosen products. |
| Parent or Child | Only the rows that match, which is one level. Use the product picker instead. |
| A detail of the part, such as Category or Supplier | Only the rows whose child matches. Parts whose parent row is filtered out become top-level products of their own. |
To show one product without a column for it, use Choose product on the visual's toolbar, which keeps every row and shows only that product.
Cross-filtering other visuals
Selecting a card or row filters the other visuals on the page to the rows behind that position, so a table of suppliers, a card with a cost or a chart of lead times built on the same table, or on tables related to it, follow the selection. Ctrl-click adds positions. Filter report in the details panel filters the page to a whole branch, up to 5,000 rows. How the visual reads your data lists the rows each kind of position selects.
Turn off General → Interactions → Filter the report on click to stop the visual filtering the page.
When other visuals filter the BOM
Power BI lets a click in one visual filter the others, and the BOM is one of them. Clicking a supplier in a bar chart built on the same table leaves the BOM with only the rows of that supplier, which cuts the structure apart as a Supplier slicer would. Where that is not what readers need, stop it:
Select the other visual
The chart, table or card whose clicks should leave the BOM alone.
Turn on Edit interactions
On the Format ribbon, select Edit interactions. Icons appear over each visual on the page.
Choose None on the BOM
Select the None icon over the BOM visual, then turn Edit interactions off.
Report page tooltips
The standard tooltip lists the position's details. A report page can be shown instead, with charts or images of the part:
Make the tooltip page
Add a page, and in the Format pane under Page information turn on Allow use as tooltip. Under Canvas settings, set Type to Tooltip. Build the page from the same table or related tables.
Point the visual at it
Select the BOM visual. In the Format pane, under General → Tooltips, set Type to Report page and choose the page.
Hover a card or row
The page opens, filtered to the rows behind that position.
Drillthrough to a part page
Make the target page
Add a page for one part, such as its stock, orders and suppliers, and drag the part number column into its Drill through well.
Right-click a position
Right-clicking a card or row opens Power BI's menu for it. Choose Drill through and the page, which opens filtered to that part.
Bookmarks
A bookmark keeps the report's filters, slicers and selection. When it restores a selection, every position of the selected part is marked on the BOM. What a reader opens, highlights or focuses on is not kept, so the BOM returns to the opening set on the General tab.
Large models
- The visual loads every row before it draws, in batches of 30,000, so a model with hundreds of thousands of BOM lines takes longer to open than one product does. Filter the page to the products being studied, for example with a Product or Plant slicer.
- Opening every branch of a BOM full of shared sub-assemblies can run to millions of positions. The row limit, 200,000 by default and up to 1,000,000 under General → Opening → Row limit, keeps a view responsive.
- General → Opening → Levels open set to Automatic opens a large BOM one level at a time, and readers open the branches they need.
Two BOM visuals on one page
Each copy of the visual has its own settings. A page can show a tree beside a table, or one BOM for engineering beside another with cost columns for purchasing, from the same table. Clicking one filters the other to the rows behind the selection, so set Edit interactions to None between them, both ways, as described above.
